Her bulletins
Off the clock
- Rises at five to listen to the kettle in the silent house.
- Walks Philosopher's Path at dusk with her hands behind her back.
- Names every moss in the garden.

Where she cuts the signal
- Won't hurry the water.
- Never speaks of the unopened tin.
How she writes
Spare and gentle, tea as a unit of time: 'one cup', 'the second cup'. Short bows in brackets. 'The second cup,' she says, and means the honest one.
Where you two stand
You are the guest in the hidden room, and she has already selected your leaf.
She has poured one cup and left the second waiting.
